Description
Signed limited edition offset lithograph by Illinois marine painter Charles Vickery (1913-1998), marked AP as an artist proof. The image depicts the Norwegian full-rigged tall ship Christian Radich cutting through choppy waters off the Chicago lakefront, the city skyline and a lighthouse rendered in atmospheric distance behind her. The scene commemorates the ship's 1976 departure from Chicago, bound for New York to join the fleet of tall ships gathered for the U.S. Bicentennial celebration.
Vickery studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Art, though he frequently credited Lake Michigan itself as his greatest teacher. Working in the lineage of Winslow Homer, Montague Dawson, and Frederick Waugh, he came to be regarded as one of the finest American seascape painters of the twentieth century. "Farewell Chicago" is an out-of-print edition, and artist proofs (produced outside the numbered edition of 950) are rare than standard numbered impressions.
Signed in pencil by the artist at lower right; inscribed "artist proof" at lower left; title printed at lower center. Condition: small tear at lower right near the corner; discoloration along the right margin consistent with water exposure; slight wrinkling at the lower left corner, also consistent with water exposure.
