Maya regions, ca. 800 - 1000 CE. Large orangeware pottery lidded urn with elaborate relief decoration depicting the face of a deity wearing a triangular headdress, and fancy flanges. The lid with a more intricate deity face having spiraled eyes, curled mustache, relief bird-form headdress and fancy side flanges. Frontal. A classic type.. 12.75”H x 9.3125”W (32.4 x 23.7cm).

Condition
Loss to two decorative elements on the left flange. Overall scattered surface deposits. Base with long stable crack starting at rim, forking at base and extending into the base, but never broken. The lid is repaired from approximately fifteen original pieces with all break lines left visible. Face portion is intact.
