Description
Burkina Faso, . A bateba figure, Lobi peoples, Burkina Faso, early to mid-20th century. Carved in hardwood with a heavily encrusted kaolin and sacrificial patina that has almost entirely obscured the surface, giving the figure a raw, accretive presence characteristic of long ritual use. The rounded head, compact torso, and arms held close to the body are legible beneath the encrustation. Figures of this type served as intermediaries between the living and the spirit world (thila), placed on family shrines and receiving regular offerings. Mounted on a custom base.. 10.63”H (27cm).
