Of domed form with a strongly curved single handle rising from the body, carved from a single piece of dense hardwood. The entire surface is worked with adze marks, now partially obscured beneath a heavily encrusted dark patina consistent with long ritual use and the application of offerings. Nupe pounders of this type functioned within shrine and initiation contexts, their form combining utility and ritual presence. The bold, elemental sculptural quality gives the object considerable visual authority.. 10”H (25.4cm).
