The exaggerated scale and boldly projecting architectural forms would have created a powerful and dramatic presence in performance. The Sukuma of northwestern Tanzania — the largest ethnic group in the country — maintained active masquerade traditions associated with the Bagika and Bagalu competitive dance societies, in which spectacular masks and costumes were central to displays of prestige and communal identity.
