The Macdonald Manufacturing Company was an early Canadian tin maker established in Toronto, Ontario in 1899 and best known for manufacturing lithographic tinware, including tea, biscuit, shortening and honey tins. The company produced tins for only a few months in 1899 before a fire gutted its plant and halted manufacturing. The plant was rebuilt and resumed full operation in 1903. The company was considered innovative for its time, being known for producing “stock” tins (generic tins that could be produced in bulk) with a blank or “privilege” space available for use by any company. They also made biscuit tins that were marketed as “patriotic lunch pails” as they were made to be re-purposed as lunch pails when the biscuits were consumed (a concept well ahead of its time). Their tinware was of superior quality and notable for their creative design. The company ceased operations in 1944 when it was sold to the Continental Can Company of Canada Limited (one of Canada’s earliest lithographed tin manufacturing companies).
