Literature
Red Rose Tea was founded in 1890 in Saint John, New Brunswick, by entrepreneur Theodore Harding Estabrooks. Initially established as a tea importing and blending company, Red Rose quickly gained a reputation for consistent quality during a period when branded consumer packaging was becoming increasingly important in the grocery trade.
The brand expanded significantly in the early twentieth century, establishing operations in both Canada and the United States. Red Rose became particularly well known for its promotional campaigns, most notably the inclusion of collectible figurines in tea boxes beginning in the 1960s. These “Wade figurines,” small ceramic animal collectibles produced in England, created strong consumer loyalty and became an iconic part of the brand’s identity.
Over the decades, Red Rose underwent several ownership changes. It became part of Brooke Bond in the mid-twentieth century and later passed through corporate restructuring before being acquired by Redco Foods in 2002. Though no longer the dominant tea brand it once was, Red Rose remains widely recognized in Canada and retains nostalgic cultural significance.
