Literature
King Cole was a Canadian packaged food label active during the twentieth century, commonly associated with pantry staples such as canned goods, baking ingredients, and household grocery products. The name drew from the traditional English nursery rhyme “Old King Cole,” a familiar cultural reference that conveyed warmth, tradition, and domestic reliability.
King Cole products were typically distributed through general stores and independent grocers, reflecting the decentralized structure of Canadian retail prior to the rise of national supermarket chains. During the early and mid-1900s, branding became increasingly important as packaged goods replaced bulk commodities, and names such as King Cole helped distinguish products on crowded shelves.
As grocery retail consolidated in the latter half of the twentieth century, many independent or regionally branded labels were either absorbed into larger corporate portfolios or discontinued. While King Cole did not emerge as a dominant national manufacturer, it remains representative of the era when regional and private-label grocery brands played a central role in everyday Canadian consumer life.
