1959 Single-sided porcelain (SSP). Sky Chief Su-preme was Texaco's high-performance premium gasoline rebranded as "super-charged" with Petrox (a type of detergent used to prevent the buildup of carbon deposits on valves and combustion chambers). The "Su-preme" text is hyphenated, an intentional marketing design that forces the reader to pause to emphasize the "Super" quality of the fuel. Since the format of trademarks on Texaco signs is typically the key feature to determining the date of production, the absence of a trademark on this sign also has relevance. When signs had a specific date code (as on this sign), it was normal for the trademark logo to be absent, as the date code gave a precise production date.
