ACCOLAY MASK-FORM SCONCE Accolay, France, c. 1955, glazed ceramic, plastic fiber with embedded wire, no electrical wiring, incised mark 'Accolay,' ht. 10, w. 13 5/8, dp. 8 in. Footnotes: Note Following World War II, a group of young ceramic artists settled in the small Burgundian town of Accolay. They began with utilitarian items like buttons. Their buttons caught the eye of fashion designer Christian Dior who used them for his famous 'New Look' Collection. This early success allowed the Potters of Accolay to greatly expand the range of forms and to experiment with glazes and enamels, and to incorporate new materials like glass and resins. The coming of more potters to town encouraged these greater creative flights, lasting into the 1970s. The location of Accolay on Route Nationale 6 brought a steady flow of traffic as Parisians traveled to and from their Cote d'Azur holidays. The pottery was displayed along the roadside, including at a large Caltex filling station. By the early 1980s, much of the vitality of earlier days was waning, tastes were changing, and new freeways bypassed Accolay. The creative Potieres closed in 1989.
