Central Africa, Gabon, Punu peoples, early to mid 20th century.
Carved wood mask with an oval white kaolin-pigmented face, narrow crescent eyes, arched brows, blackened lower face, and red-painted lips. The coiffure is carved in high relief with multiple ridged lobes rising above the forehead, with further pierced holes at the sides and back for attachment. The reverse shows adze marks, age wear, and evidence of use. The form relates to Punu white masks associated with female ideal beauty and ceremonial performance traditions in Gabon.
Independently reviewed by a member of the Ethnic Arts Council as "Made for Use and Used."
