----------------
Scipione Bargagli ( Siena , 1540 - Siena , October 27 , 1612 ) was an Italian man of letters .
Coming from a noble Sienese family, he spent his long life (1540-1612) in Siena where a vast humanistic culture was formed. The Rime and the Lettere and the Turamino , that is speaking and writing of Siena (Siena 1602), a dialogue on the question of language, are remembered by him . Better known is his Treatise on Companies (Siena, after Luca Bonetti, 1578; increased edition Venetia, after Francesco de' Franceschi from Siena, 1594), which earned him the name of the Aristotle of this learned subject; but his fame still lives on for the Entertainments , where honest and delightful games are represented by charming women and young men ,tell stories and sing some love songs (Venetia, Bernardo Giunti, 1587; edited by Laura Ricco, Rome, Salerno, 1989). The book is preceded by an introduction modeled on that of the Decameron , and dwells on the treatment of games and amorous questions and doubts; its most attractive part is made up of the six short stories of various, indeed opposing subjects, which Gaetano Poggiali extracted from the whole work by publishing them as an independent collection.
Other minor works by Bargagli are the Rovesci delle medaglie (Siena 1599), the translation of book VI of Pierio Valeriano 's Hieroglyfici (included in the vernacular edition of this humanist's works, Venice 1602) and the translation of a tragedy in Latin by Scotsman George Buchanan , Jephthah, or The Vow (Lucca 1587 and Venice 1600).
