Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911). State Savings Association check signed by Joseph Pulitzer as President of St. Louis' The Post-Dispatch encapsulated in a PSA slab graded MINT 9. Check numbered 315 in red ink, measures 8" x 3", encapsulated to an overall size of 12.5" x 5.5", St. Louis, Missouri, October 16, 1880. Excellent condition with a beautiful signature.
Joseph Pulitzer was a politician and newspaper publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and later the New York World. He became a leading national figure in the U.S. Democratic Party and served one term representing New York's 9th congressional district. Pulitzer is best known for the Pulitzer Prize, established in 1917 as specified in an endowment in his will to Columbia University. He established the Pulitzer Prize "for the encouragement of public service, public morals, American literature, and the advancement of education." At the time this check was signed, Pulitzer was just beginning his career in publishing with the Post-Dispatch which he doubled the circulation for just two years after acquiring the paper. He was also involved with the State Savings Association, serving as the President.
