Description
Imogen Cunningham was an American photographer celebrated for her botanical studies, nude photography, and industrial landscapes. She was a founding member of the California-based Group f/64, a collective renowned for its commitment to sharply focused images and the precise rendering of simple subjects. As Cunningham moved away from the soft aesthetics of Pictorialism and embraced sharply detailed photography, she joined like-minded photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Willard Van Dyke in promoting what they called “pure photography” or “straight photography.” The group advocated for direct, unmanipulated imagery created with the smallest camera apertures—symbolized by the term f/64—to achieve exceptional clarity and detail. Cunningham’s work remains highly influential for its technical mastery, modernist vision, and sensitive exploration of form and light.
