Description
Man Ray was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris and made significant contributions to both the Dada and Surrealist movements, although his associations with each were largely informal. Working across a wide range of media, he nevertheless always considered himself primarily a painter. He was also an important innovator in photography, particularly in fashion and portrait photography, and became internationally renowned for his experimental photographic works, which he called “rayographs,” a term derived from his own name. Created without the use of a camera by placing objects directly onto photosensitive paper, rayographs exemplify Man Ray’s groundbreaking approach to photographic experimentation and his enduring influence on modern art and avant-garde photography.
