This somber original work by Cuban artist Elsa Mora sits at the crossroads of myth, body, and existential meditation, encapsulating Elsa Mora’s practice of using symbolic figuration to probe the fragile boundaries between life and death, presence and absence.
Elsa Mora was born in Holguin, Cuba, in 1971. She attended the Vocational School of Arts in Holguin (1986), followed by the Professional School of Visual Arts in Camaguey, where she graduated in 1990.
Mora earned early recognition, winning the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary award for Artists (2000). Elsa Mora's work spans a variety of media, including painting, drawing, mixed-media collage, papercut sculptures, ceramics, illustration, and jewelry design. She is well known for: Autobiographical mixed media works from her early career, weaving together personal artifacts, photography, and paint to explore identity, survival, and the female condition.
Exhibits: During the late 1990s and early 2000s, she exhibited in New York, Chicago, Tokyo, and Europe, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including prestigious biennials and international venues.
Mora's work is held in the Museum of Latin American Art (Long Beach), The National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, D.C.), and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (University of Oregon). Recent Works & Shows: Mora's recent pieces include series like A Way Out, Elements of Survival, and The Other Side of Reality (2023-2024). In 2023, she presented a solo exhibition titled An Inventory of Tools for Coping in New York.
