Lidded Native American Sgraffito Seed Jar

Description

This lidded ceramic vessel from the Rubin Collection is a contemporary seed jar featuring a sophisticated combination of decorative techniques characteristic of fine Southwestern pottery. The piece is a squat, bulbous form with a recessed rim and a conforming, low-profile lid. The upper body and lid are decorated with intricate fine-line polychrome painting, utilizing black and terracotta-colored slips over a cream ground. These sections feature large eye-shaped medallions and circular sunburst motifs densely filled with geometric patterns. The lower half of the vessel is finished in a highly burnished black slip that has been deeply carved in a sgraffito technique. The carved decoration includes repeating horizontal bands of stepped fretwork, triangles, and Greek key motifs. The base also features a carved circular spiral design.
