Praechtiger Steintisch (Monopodium). 1. - 2. Jh. n. Chr. H 101 cm, B 65 cm. Die quadratische Mittelsaeule aus Breccia polychroma traegt einen baertigen Hermenkopf des Dionysos aus weissem Marmor. Der Kopf ruht auf dem schraeg abgeschnittenen oberen Teil des farbenpraechtigen Schafts aus Breccia polychroma. Dieser Kontrast traegt zum Charme dieses trapezfoermigen Tisches bei. Eine profilierte, konkave Vertiefung traegt die Tischplatte aus Marmo Africano. Der Herme hat einen langen Bart und Schnurrbart mit geschwungenen Enden und einen Mund mit laechelnden Lippen. Die aufwendige und kunstvolle Frisur ist mit einem Haarreif zusammengebunden, faellt in Locken auf seine Stirn und teilweise auf seine Schulter. Der profilierte, quadratische Sockel aus feinem weissen Marmor endet an den Ecken in vorspringenden Voluten. Die Voluten setzen sich auf der Vorderseite des Sockels als Flachrelief fort. Die Saeule ist in den profilierten, quadratischen Sockel eingelassen. Mehrere Steinmoebel dieser Art wurden in Pompeji und Herkulaneum entdeckt. Ein sehr aehnliches Trapeztraeger-Objekt wurde kuerzlich bei Sotheby?s in Paris am 13.11.2025 unter Losnummer 10 versteigert (Provenienz: Gal. Souffrice, Paris). A marvelous Roman stone table 1st - 2nd century AD. H 101cm, W 65cm. The square central column in Breccia polychroma supports a bearded herm head of Dionysos in white marble. The head rests on the oblique truncated top of the richly colored Breccia polychroma shaft. This contrast ads to the charm of this trapezophore table. A profiled concave cavetto on top supports the tabletop in Marmo Africano. The herm has a long beard and moustache, with voluted ends, the mouth with smiling lips. The complex and ornated hairdo is probably bound in a filet, it is swept up in curls on his forehead and partly falls on his shoulder. The profiled square base in a fine white marble ends in projecting volutes at the corners. The volutes continue on the frontal face of the base in low relief. The column is sunk into the profiled square base. Several of this type of stone furniture have been discovered in Pompei and Herculaneum. A very similar trapezophore recently appeared at Paris in Sotheby's Sale on 13/11/2025, lot 10 (provenance : Gal. Souffrice, Paris). This trapezophore is comparable to the one in the Metropolitan Museum, NY.
