Description
Antique 19th Century Chinese Qianlong Dynasty Tobacco Porcelain Foot Bath
This is an antique Chinese Qianlong Dynasty (circa 1880) export porcelain foot bath in a Famille This came from the estate of an antique dealer in East TN. The asymmetrical design features cobalt blue tobacco leaves, peonies, butterflies, birds and other florals in vivid hues of pink, orange, gold, and light blue. The interior is decorated with Mandarin ducks, lotus blossoms, and Lily pads. This has an elongated oval shaped with decorated handles on each end. The cobalt blue and light green leaves are a Qing reinterpretation of the Tobacco Leaf pattern, possibly influenced by the "Famille Verte" or "Famille Noire" traditions where cobalt was prominent, blended into the famille rose export style. This hybrid design was likely tailored for American or European markets in the late 19th century, where bold colors were prized. The peacock and peony motifs reinforce its decorative intent, distinguishing it from utilitarian wares and aligning it with high quality luxury export goods.
It Looks to be unmarked as most export pieces were during this time period, hard to see due to the staining/soiling on the bottom. This has some surface wear on the exterior and roughness on the bottom. I could find no chips or cracks. Remarkable condition.
Provenance: These were originally commissioned by European traders (notably the Dutch East India Company) and later popularized in America, often for elite households.
