Description
A richly patinated architectural fragment, entirely hand-painted and likely from an Italian or Spanish chapel ceiling or canopy, circa 1780–1820.
The pyramidal form centers on a carved foliate rosette in layered verdigris tones, surrounded by four inset panels with scrolling arabesques in shades of red, ochre, and green over a bole ground.
The original 18th-century polychrome decoration shows a complex surface history, with evidence of later overpainting. The underlying early pigments remain visible through areas of wear and natural age, creating a surface of remarkable depth and authenticity.
Hand-sawn pine boards joined with early cut nails confirm 18th- to early-19th-century craftsmanship, typical of southern European ecclesiastical interiors from the late-Baroque to early-Neoclassical period. The panel retains its original structure and richly aged finish, displaying layered pigments and oxidation consistent with great age.
