Description
This custom-made dining set has been in a single family for six generations, dating back to 1880s Chicago, IL. Gorgeous golden tiger oak, cottage-style, in excellent vintage condition. Original owner was a well-respected lawyer and prominent state politician in 1880s Chicago.
Extending banquet table with oblong bevel-molded top above an Eastlake-style scratch-carved and channel-molded skirt above three block-and-baluster-turned and carved legs with connecting end stretchers centering basket-of-fruit carved panels. Six additional leaves.
Set includes table pads, sufficient to cover table in various configurations, up to full extension with all 6 leaves installed. 2 x trifold 26 x 53 inches, 2 bifold 14 x 53 inches, 2 bifold 7 x 53 inches.
It is believed that table originally included only 3 leaves, and 3 additional leaves were made at a later date (likely early to mid-20th century). 3 leaves in same golden oak wood. Due to custom nature of build, leaves have slightly different widths (2 at 7 inches and 1 at 6 3/4 inches). 3 leaves are in different wood (likely maple), 1 at 7 1/2 inches, and 2 at 7 inches wide. Post and hole design keeps leaves in place and determines order of placement in extension.
Metal corner braces added likely mid-20th century. Pedestals can remove for transport. Pedestal legs include original wooden double-wheel casters. Glass coasters (included) help protect carpets and prevent rolling.
