Description: [Sketch of the Public Surveys in Kansas and Nebraska]. The earliest map to depict the newly established Kansas and Nebraska Territories, created by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of May 30, 1854. Issued just a few months later, this map outlines the baseline and initial area designated for survey, though it predates any actual surveying activity. Compiled by the General Land Office under Surveyor General John Calhoun, it was published as part of a Senate report. In the index to that document—and on later editions—the map is titled "Sketch of the Public Surveys in Kansas and Nebraska." However, this first issue appears to have been assembled somewhat hastily, as it lacks a printed title or formal attribution on the map itself. by US Topographical Bureau. Published 1854.
