Title: Canadian Arctic / Northwest Passage — Discoveries of Dease & Simpson 1840 map Description: Discoveries of Messrs. Dease and Simpson in 1839 from Coronation Gulf to Boat River'. Thomas Simpson and Peter Warren Dease led a Hudson’s Bay Company expedition (1836–1839) to complete the charting of Arctic Canada’s northern coastline and close remaining gaps in the search for the Northwest Passage. Travelling by boat and on foot from the Mackenzie and Coppermine rivers, they linked earlier surveys by Franklin and Beechey, and mapped stretches of previously unknown coast. However, the expedition was to be overshadowed by mystery and tragedy. In 1840, while travelling south to seek approval for further exploration, Simpson is believed to have shot two companions near Turtle River (present-day North Dakota) and was himself found dead, officially ruled a murder–suicide. Conflicting testimony has fuelled controversy and industrial espionage conspiracy theories ever since. by The Nautical Magazine. Published 1840. Antique engraved map.
