Description
NON-GLASS HANDMADE, Earthenware. Exceptionally rare Earthenware marble. Base is red pottery and then it was completely covered by black slip. It was then etched using the sgraffito technique. The etching includes the date "1848", the initials "WHF", a vine encircling the marble and various pattern and shapes. Gorgeous exceptionally rare marble. The iconography and method would indicate this is probably of Lowlands origin (Netherlands or Belgium), rather than Germany. Dated 1848. #1165. The purchaser subsequently sold his collection another collector and that collector has consigned the marble here. This is the only one of these we have ever seen, and no other examples have turned up since the previous sale of this one. Possibly a unique example. 25/32". Mint (9.9).
