The set consists of hand-painted molded resin figurines divided into two factions: the Union (North) and the Confederate (South). Grant, a Queen in a period blue gown, Bishops as buglers, Knights as cavalrymen on rearing black horses, and Rooks as the U.S. Capitol building draped in the American flag. The pawns are kneeling infantrymen holding rifles. The Confederate pieces are finished in gray uniforms and include a King modeled after General Robert E. Lee, a Queen in a period gray gown, Bishops as buglers, Knights as cavalrymen on rearing brown horses, and Rooks as a capitol-style building draped in the Confederate Battle Flag. Pawns are kneeling infantrymen holding rifles. Each figurine stands on a circular base with relief-molded decorative scrollwork; the Union bases are finished in a gold tone and the Confederate bases are finished in a silver tone.
