Description
This collection consists of an assortment of glass magic lantern slides, primarily educational and scientific in nature, produced in the late 19th to early 20th century. A significant portion of the collection features technical and scientific diagrams bearing the printed mark of the C. H. Stoelting Co. of Chicago, Illinois. These slides illustrate various physics and engineering principles, including concave mirrors, thermometer scales, air pumps, electrical interrupters, pipe organ and piano mechanics, primary and secondary cells, the law of squares in optics, magnetic needles, Corliss engines, and camera image formation. At least one slide is attributed to the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, titled Animals-The Largest Animals That Ever Lived, and others mention Scott-Foresman Co. and Mann and Twiss, Physics. The topographical and architectural slides include views of Watkins Glen (path on Narrow Ledge), Niagara Falls (Horseshoe from South side Goat Island), the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and various monuments. One slide features a color-tinted interior view of a formal hall or church, possibly a legislative chamber or memorial, with a central altar and an American flag. The slides are constructed of glass plates with photographic or printed emulsions, most of which are framed with black or light-colored paper tape. A small number are housed in metal or silver-toned frames. Measurements: Approximately 3.25 x 4 inches per slide.
