This striking Plains-style pipe bag, likely of Lakota (Sioux) origin and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, showcases the transition of artistry into the early reservation era. The main body is crafted from supple brain-tanned buckskin, featuring vibrant "lazy stitch" beadwork on a traditional white ground with geometric motifs in cobalt, red, and emerald green. A standout feature is the intricate quillwork panel, displaying horizontal slats wrapped in deep red and multicolored porcupine quills, which provides a sophisticated textural contrast to the glass trade beads. The long, hand-cut fringe remains largely intact and adds significant visual movement to the piece.
