This striking piece is a contemporary display figure, likely created in the late 20th century, designed to represent a Native American chief or elder. The figure's body is a large, cylindrical log which serves as the core structure, wrapped in textiles. The head appears to be crafted from clay or plaster, carved with expressive features and adorned with a fur cap, possibly rabbit or coyote, and dark braids of hair or rope wrapped with twine. The log core is draped with an assemblage of textiles, including a heavy, tan-colored leather or suede shawl/cape, and a brightly colored, patterned woven textile, possibly a rug or blanket, in deep reds, blacks, and teal, which wraps the figure's body. Condition-wise, the figure presents well for a display piece, the textiles show general display wear, including some fading, minor fraying, and a few white lint spots on the woven material and fur cap.
