Description
This basket is likely made by the Pomo peoples indigenous to Northern California. Their baskets are renowned for their intricate weaving techniques, diverse materials, and cultural significance. This basket was made using a coiling technique. Traditionally utilizing materials such as willow, sage, and red bud bark. The basket design is a geometric pattern possibly a variation of the “dau” or “spirit door”- a significant design element in Pomo basketry representing a place for ancestors to enter and teach the weaver. The pattern is created by alternating light and dark elements, showcasing the weaver’s skill and manipulating materials and colors. This is a stunning piece when you really focus in on the details. Due to its age it, it suffers some loss of material. However this adds to the character of the piece. Dimensions: 9” at widest x 4.25” tall. Rim opening 6.75” x base approximately 4” diameter. Please see photos.
