These striking Native American moccasins are a masterclass in Plains-style artistry, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. According to the accompanying provenance note, these "Large Indian moccasins" originate from the Gr. Uncle Pierre Picken's Collection. Constructed from supple brain-tanned buckskin, they feature extensive "lazy stitch" beadwork covering the entire vamp and the soles. As the note specifies, moccasins "beaded on the bottom" are traditionally "considered burial moccasins" and are highly valued by collectors. The geometric motifs—specifically the Lakota (Sioux) "forked tree" or "dragonfly" variations and the stepped triangles—suggest a Western Plains origin. The use of "greasy yellow" and "dark forest green" seed beads is a hallmark of late 19th-century color palettes. Condition is consistent with age; there is significant bead loss and thread breaks on the soles where the hide is exposed, along with some minor hardening of the leather and loose threads on the ankle cuffs.
