1989 painting CRUCIFIХION AND DEATH OF JESUS by Quechua artist Francisco Umajimga Ilaquichi from Tigua, Ecuador. Oil or acrylic paint on sheep hide stretched on a wooden frame. Heartbreaking earnest rendition of a biblical scene adapted to the High Andes reality with sheep that look more like lamas, Quechua shepherds in typical clothes, hats and Andean reed flutes, characteristic agave plants in the foreground and a volcano in the distance. Deep felt and very unusual, probably unique, subject for the region - usually Tigua artists depict dazzlingly colorful village festivals and scenes. Traditionally they decorated drums and masks, and this painting still can almost function as an efficient drum when you tap it from the back. Superb primitive painting with excellent detailing - see the tools of crucifixion next to the body of Christ and finely painted grass. Wooden frame made and decorated by the artist, signed in the lower right corner and titled on the back. The painting is in excellent condition.
