19th century boxwood netsuke of the Zen Patriarch Daruma sitting in meditative pose enveloped in his monastic robe with cape. Great carving, fantastic face, beautiful flow to the lines of his robe, superb staining and patina. Differently sized himotoshi lined with light and black buffalo horn. Signed SHUMIN on the bottom for Hara Shumin - this excellent artist is listed on p. 995 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Wonderful sculpture. Height 1.43 inches.
