HOPPER EDWARD: (1882-1967) American realist painter. A rare A.L.S., Edward Hopper, one page, 4to, Truro, Massachusetts, 5th September 1950, to [Leon] Kroll. Hopper informs his correspondent ´The only one I can think of at the present time worthy of a grant from the Institute of Arts & Letters is a sculptress - LOU DOUBLE of 20 or 22 Washington Square North, New York´, further advising that the address should be checked as he is not entirely sure of it, and concluding by remarking ´If I think of someone else in the near future I shall send in their names. When does the committee meet?´. VG
Leon Kroll (1884-1974) American painter and lithographer, elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1930.
In the present letter Hopper appears to be recommending the English-born American artist Lu Duble (1896-1970) for a grant.
