Mann thanks his correspondent for having sent him two free tickets for Albert Steffen’s birthday party, although remarks ´To my sincere regret, however, I am unable to accept your kind invitation, as I have a lecture at ETH the following evening, and my state of health does not permit me to go out on two consecutive evenings´. Albert Steffen (1884-1963) Swiss poet, painter, dramatist, essayist, and novelist. Steffen celebrated his 70th birthday on 10th December 1954.
