JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) British pioneer aviatrix, the first woman to fly solo from London to Australia, 1930. Vintage signed 6.5 x 8.5 photograph of Johnson standing outdoors in a full-length pose, holding a parasol in one hand and a pith helmet in the other. A car can be seen alongside and several other individuals, one wearing a fez, can be seen in the immediate background. The present photograph is accompanied by a separate, contemporary typed caption which explains that the image was captured on the pier at Steamer Point, Aden, when Johnson was on her way to visit No. 8 Squadron at Khormaksar. This stop-off was made during Johnson´s return, by boat, from Australia to England following her historic flight in 1930. Also included is a smaller, unsigned 2 x 3 photograph of a young girl speaking to Johnson (obscured by a gentleman standing before her) on the same occasion.
