Description
This rectangular stoneware pitcher, sourced from the Rubin Collection, is attributed to the Dudson pottery of Hanley, Staffordshire. The vessel is crafted from buff-colored stoneware with a matte finish and features white sprigged relief decoration in the Aesthetic Movement style with prominent Japonisme influences. The tapered body is supported by four integral bracket feet and terminates in a square rim with a pinched pouring spout. The handle is intricately molded in the form of a scaled dragon or sea creature. Each of the four sides is decorated with distinct white slip-molded motifs applied in relief, including bamboo stalks, flowering plum or cherry blossom branches, a large chrysanthemum, a dragonfly, and a stylized crane in flight. The underside of the base is incised with the number 1871, likely representing the date of manufacture or a specific mold number.
