Description
An unusually large English Victorian period "scrap screen." Circa 1880. 68" high and with four mahogany framed leather panels at 22" wide each, the extended screen measures approximately 80" wide (extended as shown). Most decopage screens of this type are much smaller affairs and, oftentimes, are decorated on one side only. This floor standing example is decorated on both sides of the panels with a breathtaking profusion of subjects: from flora and fauna, to soldiers, cartoon characters, children, women with floral adorned hairstyles, and cats and dogs and birds. The amount of time and attention to detail that went into creating this piece of art is remarkable.
Given the age of this piece and the delicacy of the art form of decoupage, it is understandable that some of the collage pieces have wrinkled and puckered , but no area of the screen is in danger of lifting off or becoming unglued -- and given careful handling and proper display (away from direct sunlight) this piece should continue to last and be a delightful addition to any room.
