Description
This framed textile presents a fine example of a Late Qing Dynasty Mamianqun (Horse-Face Skirt), traditionally worn by Han Chinese women. Set against a neutral cream backing within a gilded ornamental frame, the skirt panel is crafted from a refined celadon-green silk damask. The central "horse-face" panel"”the flat, unpleated section"”features elaborate forbidden stitch (seed stitch) and satin stitch embroidery depicting a large, multi-petaled peony and a soaring phoenix, symbols of wealth and high social status.
The garment is structured with characteristic vertical black silk ribbon inserts that define the crisp pleating, which is further accented by delicate floral sprigs and butterflies scattered across the fabric. A wide, dark navy or black border runs along the hem and the edges of the central panel, intricately decorated with continuous floral scrolls and geometric "wan" fret patterns in varying shades of blue, gold, and coral. The subtle sheen of the silk and the preservation of the embroidered details suggest a high-quality piece of 19th-century textile art, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship of the era.
