Description
Antique Staffordshire Blue Willow Transfer Ironstone Oval Platter, Circa 1860s
A classic and enduringly beautiful example of mid-19th century Staffordshire blue transfer ironstone, this handsome oval platter in the beloved Blue Willow pattern represents one of the most recognized and warmly appreciated decorative traditions in the entire history of English ceramic production. The Blue Willow pattern "” with its instantly recognizable chinoiserie landscape of willow trees, arched bridges, pagodas, and mandarin ducks "” has been in continuous production since the late 18th century and remains among the most actively collected and decoratively versatile of all English transferware patterns, as fresh and appealing today as when this platter left the Staffordshire kilns more than 160 years ago.
The pattern is rendered here on a robust ironstone body "” the dense, heavy duty ceramic body developed by Staffordshire potters in the early 19th century specifically for the demanding requirements of the Victorian dining table, its exceptional weight and durability making it the preferred choice for large format serving pieces intended for serious everyday use. The combination of the classic Blue Willow pattern with the substantial ironstone body gives this platter a satisfying heft and presence that lighter earthenware examples simply cannot match.
At 17¾ by 14¼ inches this is a well scaled and generously proportioned serving platter "” large enough to present a substantial roast or joint with room to spare, and impressive enough to command attention displayed on a dresser, sideboard, or wall. The absence of a maker's mark is not uncommon for Staffordshire ironstone production of this period, when many smaller potteries produced Blue Willow wares without marking their output.
The condition is honest and straightforward "” no chips or cracks of any kind, with staining, crazing, and wear marks entirely consistent with more than 160 years of domestic table service. A clean and structurally sound example of a perennially beloved English transferware pattern.
