Description
Rare Antique Pink Lustre and Bat Printed Pearlware Waste Bowl, Attributed to Thomas Wolfe, Circa 1805
An exceptionally rare and beautifully preserved example of early 19th-century English pearlware, this elegant waste bowl attributed to the celebrated Staffordshire potter Thomas Wolfe combines two of the most technically demanding and visually accomplished decorative techniques of the Regency period "” bat printing and pink lustre "” in a single object of considerable rarity and collector significance.
The waste bowl "” an integral and essential component of the formal English tea service, used to receive spent tea leaves and rinse water during the tea ceremony "” is decorated with the same exquisite bat printed manor house scene found throughout the Thomas Wolfe service to which it belongs, depicting a romantic English country house set among trees with swans and deer completing the idyllic pastoral composition. The extraordinary fineness and tonal delicacy of the bat printed decoration "” achieving an almost engraving-like precision impossible with standard transfer printing techniques "” is complemented throughout by glowing pink lustre banded edges, the warm iridescent metallic surface playing beautifully against the cool blue-white of the pearlware body.
At 6½ inches across and 3½ inches tall this is a well-proportioned and visually satisfying example of the form, displaying beautifully as a standalone decorative object or as part of a assembled Thomas Wolfe bat printed service. The condition is excellent throughout "” a remarkable survival for a piece of this age, fragility, and everyday working purpose "” with only minor staining and crazing entirely consistent with its more than two centuries of careful tea table service.
Waste bowls in documented patterns and attributed to specific makers are significantly rarer than cups, saucers, and plates from the same services, as they were subject to the heaviest daily use and suffered accordingly. This example's excellent state of preservation makes it a genuinely special find.
