Description
A refined 18th century aquatint engraving from the renowned Hamilton Collection of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities.
This plate, numbered 38, is drawn and engraved after the celebrated collection assembled by Sir William Hamilton during his tenure as British envoy to Naples. First published between 1766 and 1776, these engravings became a cornerstone of the Neoclassical movement, shaping European taste and influencing artists, designers, and makers including Josiah Wedgwood.
The composition reflects the iconic visual language of ancient Greek red-figure pottery, rendered in warm terracotta tones against a deep black ground, with subtle highlights in pale gray and white. The figures are elegantly spaced, creating a rhythmic, architectural balance that reads beautifully at a distance.
As with the series as a whole, this work sits at the intersection of archaeology and artistic interpretation. These engravings were instrumental in disseminating classical imagery across Europe, while also reflecting the evolving stylistic lens of the 18th century.
Presented in a gold-toned frame with double matting in ivory and rust, this piece has a strong decorative presence while retaining its scholarly appeal.
