Description
A Very Nice Antique Sheraton Astragal End, Lift Lid Sewing Stand, Philadelphia, Circa 1810's
Most likely made in a Philadelphia cabinet shop circa 1800-1825
Not many of these tables survive, very unusual to find such a nice table.
Very nice astragal shaped ends, and delicate reeded and turned legs. The reeded columns on the case match on both sides of the case, in the front and back.
Top lifts open to reveal and large square compartment and two deeper compartments in the astragal ends. In the centre of the case there is 1 drawer, and 1 door.
This is a period Sheraton example made from Mahogany and mahogany veneers, with pine and poplar secondary woods. The drawer is dovetailed.
These were copied in general form in the 1930's and 1940's and are commonly referred to as "Martha Washington" Sewing Stands.
Retains an early brass knob on the drawer, doubtful that it is original however. No key.
Size: 24 3/4" wide, 14" deep, and 29" tall.
Condition: Refinished. Several small pieces of veneer repairs. Overall very good. Some minor veneer nicks and loss on the edge banding. A piece of cockbead edging from the base of the end is missing (pictured)
The legs are intact, and not broken. (These tables often suffer from broken legs due to the delicateness of the legs)
Condition:
Alterations: Restored
