Description
A hardback copy of "On the Other Side: 23 Days with the Viet Cong" by Kate Webb in good condition overall. "On the Other Side: 23 Days with the Viet Cong" is a 1972 memoir by renowned Australian journalist Kate Webb. It details her harrowing capture and imprisonment by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces in Cambodia during the Vietnam War, offering a grounded, deeply humanizing look at the enemy. In April 1971, Webb—then working as the UPI bureau chief in Phnom Penh—was ambushed and taken prisoner by Viet Cong troops alongside five male colleagues. Because they were held in remote jungle camps and out of contact for weeks, the outside world presumed they were dead. The New York Times even mistakenly published her obituary. During their 23 days of captivity, Webb and her group were moved from camp to camp, surviving on minimal rations of rice and soup. Despite the fear of air strikes and intense interrogations, Webb’s account famously avoided the traditional, sensationalized tone of a prison "ordeal". Instead, she focused on observing the strict discipline and humanity of her captors, detailing how they shared the same hardships, grouches, and sore feet. This is a highly sought after 1st Edition published by Quadrangle Books and has been out of print for several decades with other examples selling for between $150-400.
