Description
This lot consists of several (estimated 40+/-) letters and historical military records for a 1st Lt. Claude E. Smith of the 4th Balloon Co. He was born on April 16th, 1892 in Ohio, making him to be in his early 20s during the onset of The War to End all Wars. It shows he was fluent in French as well as English. The lot includes his personal "Officer's Record Book". It also includes detailed service records from his time with the 4th Balloon Brgd, 2nd Squadron. It shows an honorable discharge dated 1917 indicating re-enlistment into the U.S . A.E.F. and special orders when he was assigned to new duty stations. It includes Service Stripe Requests to commanding officers of his unit for service set forth overseas; a certificate codifying his promotion to R.M.A. and several letters to his "Sweetheart" Evah D. Kennedy of Canton, O.H. These documents show he continued service for in the Army beyond WWI. Also included are several pictures of his unit, other military experiences, his service picture in uniform, a picture of his family and a letter commemorating his service seemingly signed by President Ronald Reagan upon Smith's passing.
