Description
A vibrant collection of Mexican folk art Alebrijes and an interesting Mayan figure. Tlaquepaque or Petatillo-lite. It shares some similarities with Tonalá pottery, the heavy use of red clay and lead-based glazes typical of mid-20th-century San Pedro Tlaquepaque is more likely given the "fragile" feel and San Antonio provenance. The Alebrijes include a striking teal deer-like creature with gold and pink accents, a lean pink feline, and a smaller purplish-pink winged creature, all hand-carved and painted with intricate patterns. Accompanying these is a unique indigenous Mayan figure, possibly Tlapaqueque or Petatillo-lite, featuring three smaller figures, seemingly on a piece of petrified wood, exhibiting characteristics of mid-20th-century San Pedro Tlaquepaque pottery with heavy use of red clay and lead-based glazes. The fragile feel and San Antonio provenance suggest its origin. This lot offers a diverse representation of traditional craftsmanship and artistic expression.
