1. Japanese Wood Netsuke: Anthropomorphic Bakeneko (Supernatural Cat). A fine 19th-century wood carving of a cat in a traditional kimono. Distinctive feline facial features including rounded cheeks and carved whiskers, the weight, folds and creases of the robe are stunningly captured. Incredible detail on the underside of the robe and the geta foot ware. Includes an integrated himotoshi behind the obi.
2. Signed 19th C. Boxwood Netsuke: Three Macaques with Peaches of
Immortality". A cluster of playful monkeys netsuke.Signed Masayuki. Late 19th century. Note the three wise monkeys, this group of monkeys playing around a branch and two peaches is much more creative and requires greater skill. Could be Hoshunsai Masayuki. 19th century either Edo or Meiji. The "Monkey and Peach" (Saru to Momo) imagery is very collectible because of its roots in folk legends like Momotaro (Peach Boy).
