BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, two alphabet and numeral rows segmented by two linear bands of stitching, below depicting various motifs throughout including two dogs, flowers, flowers in baskets and urns / vases, birds, and two stag deer, center signed "Jane Earl / Finished on / the 1st of May / 1850" within a foliate frame, all encompassed by a floral or strawberry vine border. Housed under glass in a later wood frame having backing board likely from original frame, which features a label that reads, "JOHN DUMARESQ, / PICTURE FRAME MAKER, / 4, LAMBERT TERRACE, / BRUNSWICK STREET, BLACKWALL." Dated 1850. 17 3/4" x 16" sight, 21" x 19 1/4" OA.

Very good visual condition with overall toning, some small losses to thread which appears to mostly being of one or two colors, some thread with typical fugitive color, frame with wear and surface scratches, appears to have been previously attached to something along the lower edge having two notches. Not examined out of frame.
