SCOTTISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool, and possibly other thread, on linen, three alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, below with two rows of initials that read "EACHCAAAMA [motif] / WAAAMYWHCL", center and lower third featuring various pictorial motifs including vases of flowers, a pair of trees topped by birds, a multi-colored bird, a heart, rabbits, two dogs, a pair of peacocks, and a crown, bottom row signed "[Margr]et An[n]an Aged 14 1828 18[...?]", all surrounded by a linear border. Housed under glass in a later frame. Dated 1828. 11 7/8" x 17 1/4" sight, 12 7/8" x 18 1/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: Possibly identified as Margaret Annan (Annon), who was born on June 2, 1814 in Wemyss, Fife, Scotland to parents Edward Annan (Annon) and Christian Houge (Hogg). Not much is known about Margaret, it appears she had at least two brothers, Andrew (b.1812) and William (b.1816). She married David Swayne (b.c.1791-1882) some time after 1851, and the couple did not have children together. Margaret died on April 21, 1899 in Dysart, Fife, Scotland.
Mostly in good to very good visual condition with linen having some toning and stains, scattered losses to thread most notably along edges, most thread retains color, frame with wear, losses along edges. Not examined out of frame.
