AMERICAN "NINE PATCH" PIECED QUILT

Description

AMERICAN "NINE PATCH" PIECED QUILT, hand-stitched, completed in polychrome print, woven, and solid fabrics, 144 on-point pattern blocks alternating with plain white on-point blocks, having all-over Baptist fan quilting, applied print fabric binding, three-paneled plain backing with later-applied strip of fabric for hanging. Mid 19th century. 90 3/4" x 93 1/4".

Provenance:

Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.

Condition

Very good overall condition, top with some light toning and stains, some of the off-white fabric with black flower print having holes and losses, some fabrics with fugitive color, backing with light to heavy toning, some scattered stains.
