Description
Dissecting Map of the United States. Hand-colored printed jigsaw puzzle map, paper mounted on wood. Philadelphia: Shaffer, circa 1865. Original wooden box with patriotic illustrated paper label. Assembled 17 3/4 x 10 3/4 in.
A charming "dissecting map" of the United States, what we would now call a jigsaw puzzle. Almost certainly dating from 1865, the map shows Nevada as a state but still lacking its "tip" which was transferred from Arizona on 5 May 1866. Additionally, Wyoming Territory is still depicted as an extension of Dakota Territory.
